Jio IPO Record: How India’s Largest Share Sale Rewrote Market History With 10 Milestones

Jio rewrites IPO history in India. Here’s how

Jio IPO has made history in the Indian stock market by raising ₹30,188 crore in what is now recorded as the country’s largest initial public offering. The telecom and technology firm achieved a strong debut on Wednesday, October 28, with its shares listing at a premium of around 21 per cent over the initial public offering price.

The shares rose to ₹1,375 in early trading compared to the issue price of ₹1,119 apiece, pushing the company valuation to over $131 billion. With this stellar market entry, Jio Platforms Ltd is set to become India’s second-most valuable listed company after parent Reliance Industries Ltd, overtaking rival Bharti Airtel Ltd.

The listing ceremony in Mumbai was attended by Mukesh Ambani, his wife Nita Ambani, and their children Akash, Isha, and Anant Ambani. Akash Ambani, serving as the managing director of Jio, stated that the listing marks a new beginning that brings greater responsibility, higher expectations, and a bigger opportunity, with the ultimate vision of establishing Jio as a global technology company.

Milestones And Fundraising Records Set By Jio Platforms

Jio Platforms shattered multiple records across fundraising, bidding categories, and retail participation during the share sale. The issue size of ₹30,188 crore surpassed the previous high set in 2024 by Hyundai Motor India at ₹27,870 crore.

The offering was structured entirely as a fresh issue, making it the largest Indian IPO without any offer-for-sale component. Existing shareholders, including Reliance Industries, Meta, and Google, did not sell any shares through this offering. The company plans to utilise up to ₹27,500 crore of the proceeds to repay or prepay borrowings at Reliance Jio Infocomm, while allocating the remaining balance for general corporate purposes.

Demand across investor categories remained exceptionally robust, with public bids reaching ₹4,90,415 crore to surpass the previous record of ₹4,39 lakh crore held by LG Electronics India. Overall, the issue was subscribed 22.19 times. Furthermore, the share sale achieved full subscription within 100 minutes of opening, outpacing other major share sales like Hyundai Motors, LIC of India, and the NSE IPO.

Institutional And Retail Investor Participation

Qualified institutional buyers placed bids worth approximately ₹3.87 lakh crore, pushing the institutional portion subscription to 70.55 times. This reflected strong interest from domestic mutual funds, insurance companies, and foreign portfolio investors.

Retail investors submitted 1,05,13,429 applications, contributing bids worth nearly ₹26,000 crore with a 2.72 times subscription rate. Additionally, eligible shareholders of Reliance Industries utilised a separate dedicated route, generating 21,62,500 applications to link the public issue directly to the investor base of Jio’s parent company.

Participation from large high-net-worth investors also broke previous benchmarks, with applications crossing 3.5 lakh compared to the earlier record of 2,71,403. At the offer price, the implied market capitalisation of Jio Platforms touched around ₹10.3 lakh crore, positioning the company alongside global giants like Meta, Alibaba, and SpaceX in crossing the $100-billion valuation mark at the time of listing.
