Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated the Poonamallee-Vadapalani stretch of Phase II of the Chennai Metro Rail Project, built at a cost of around ₹4,900 crore.
During the event, PM Modi took a train ride on the newly inaugurated route alongside Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay. Both leaders jointly flagged off the new metro services in the presence of Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, with the Prime Minister purchasing a ticket and interacting briefly with a counter employee.
Chennai Metro Phase II Stretch Details
The newly opened route is part of Corridor 4 of Phase II, spanning approximately 15 kilometres and featuring 11 elevated metro stations. The alignment includes a 3.7-kilometre double-decker structure and advanced signalling infrastructure designed for future driverless train operations, aiming to ease travel between Chennai’s western suburbs and the city centre.
According to Chennai Metro Rail, regular passenger operations on the stretch commenced at 4 pm on Sunday, running until 9 pm. From October 12 onwards, services will operate daily from 7 am to 9 pm, with the final trains departing at 9 pm from both terminal stations at Poonamallee Bypass and Vadapalani.

Temple Visit And IIT Madras Brain Centre
Earlier in the day, PM Modi offered prayers at the Sri Jalakanteswara Swamy Temple in Tamil Nadu before proceeding to visit the Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre at IIT Madras. The Prime Minister is scheduled to officially dedicate the scientific facility to the nation.
The facility forms part of an initiative aimed at mapping over 100 human brains into three-dimensional cellular-resolution atlases across various life stages, from the foetal period to old age. Additionally, the Prime Minister will release C-STROKE, a human ischaemic stroke atlas containing more than 1,000 annotated microscopic sections from a stroke-affected brain to aid future treatment research. Later, he is scheduled to attend the golden jubilee celebrations of Jaigopal Garodia Hindu Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School.
Infrastructure And Transport Projects In Tamil Nadu
As part of his itinerary, PM Modi will inaugurate and lay foundation stones for national highway projects across Tamil Nadu worth approximately ₹3,700 crore. These developments feature the 36-km four-laned Vadugapatti-Therkuvenganallur section and the 30-km four-laned Madurai Ring Road section of NH-744A, alongside the four-lane Thiruvarur Bypass on the Nagapattinam-Thanjavur section of NH-83.
The Prime Minister will also inaugurate five Amrit Stations located at Palani, Vellore Cantonment, Ambasamudram, Paramakkudi and Namakkal, alongside multiple port-related upgrades at Chennai Port, Kamarajar Port and V O Chidambaranar Port to enhance maritime capacity and logistics. Furthermore, he will lay the foundation stone for a Group II/III Lube Oil Base Stocks project at the Manali Refinery of Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited, valued at around ₹1,620 crore with an annual capacity of 270 thousand metric tonnes.
