Hurricane Trudy Strengthens to Category 2 Near Mexico With Heavy Rains Expected

Hurricane Trudy strengthens to category 2 as it heads toward Mexico | Mexico

Hurricane Trudy has strengthened into a category 2 weather system while moving toward Mexico’s south-western and west-central Pacific coast on Saturday, according to the US National Hurricane Center.

The system was located about 205 miles (330km) south/south-east of Cabo Corrientes and 115 miles (180km) south/south-west of Manzanillo, packing maximum sustained winds of 100mph (155km/h). Moving north-west at 10mph (17km/h), the center of the storm was expected to approach the Mexican coast on Saturday and pass near it into Sunday.

Meanwhile, in the Pacific, Typhoon Champi intensified into a category 4 storm while moving west toward Guam at 15mph (24km/h).

Key Points Of Hurricane Trudy And Typhoon Champi

  • A hurricane warning remained in effect from Manzanillo in Colima state to Cabo Corrientes in Jalisco.
  • The Mexican government issued a tropical storm warning for Las Islas Marias while discontinuing a similar warning south of Lazaro Cardenas.
  • Typhoon Champi was recorded about 25 miles (40km) south-east of Guam with maximum sustained winds of 140mph (225km/h).
  • Governors of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands requested emergency disaster declarations on Friday.

Warnings And Official Guidance In Mexico

The Mexican navy urged mariners and coastal residents to exercise extreme caution due to high waves, heavy rain, and the risk of rising rivers, flooding, and landslides in vulnerable areas. Colima authorities stated that risks remained low but warned that heavy rainfall could cause damage because the ground was already saturated by successive storms along the Pacific coast.

Hurricane Trudy was expected to bring 4-8in (10-20cm) of rain through the weekend, with isolated totals reaching about 15in (38cm). Following the latest updates, authorities adjusted coastal advisories as the weather system approached land.

Typhoon Champi Approaches Guam

By Saturday night local time, Typhoon Champi was forecast to pass south of Guam early Sunday local time and continue intensifying through the day. Guam and Rota remained under a typhoon warning, while Tinian and Saipan were placed under a tropical storm warning and typhoon watch.

The governors of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands requested emergency disaster declarations, which would authorize federal support and funding for emergency protective measures if approved. Airports, harbors, and some health facilities in the territories were closed, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency indicated that resources were unlikely to reach the islands for three to five days.

The affected territories are still recovering from Super Typhoons Sinlaku and Bavi, which struck in April and July, respectively.
